  • European settlers arrived in the mid-19th century, primarily using the area for summer cattle grazing.
  • The Kiewa electrical scheme kickstarted construction in the 1940s, laying the groundwork for the future resort.

Birth of a ski resort (1948-1960s):

  • In 1948, the first ski lodge was built by Kiewa workers, marking the beginnings of Falls Creek as a winter destination.
  • The 1950s saw rapid development, with the first rope tow in 1951 and the landmark construction of Australia’s first chairlift in 1957.
  • Falls Creek transformed into a bustling winter resort, attracting skiers from across the country.

Growth and evolution (1970s-2000s):

  • The resort continued to expand with new lifts, trails, and accommodation facilities.
  • Concerns about the impact of cattle grazing on the fragile alpine environment led to the phasing out of grazing licenses in 2005.
  • Falls Creek established itself as a major player in the Australian ski industry, hosting major events and competitions.

Recent developments (2010s-present):

  • In 2019, Vail Resorts acquired Falls Creek, marking a new chapter in its ownership and management.
