About Thredbo
Getting to Perisher, Australia’s largest ski resort, is an adventure in itself, offering multiple travel options depending on your starting location and preferred mode of transport. Whether you’re coming from Sydney, Canberra, or Melbourne, you can reach Perisher by car, bus, train, or even a combination of transport modes, including the Skitube Alpine Railway.
For those driving from Sydney, the journey takes about 5.5 hours. The best route is via the M31 Hume Highway to Goulburn, then onto the Monaro Highway through Cooma and Jindabyne. From Jindabyne, you can either drive directly to Perisher (snow chains required for 2WDs) or park at Bullocks Flat and take the Skitube. The Skitube is a convenient option, as it allows you to avoid Kosciuszko National Park entry fees and driving in icy conditions. From Canberra, the drive is shorter—around 2.5 hours—and follows the same route through Cooma and Jindabyne.
If you prefer public transport, buses run from Sydney and Canberra to Jindabyne, where you can transfer to a Perisher shuttle or the Skitube. Alternatively, you can fly to Canberra Airport and take a shuttle service directly to Perisher, making it a good option for those traveling from interstate. For visitors from Melbourne, the drive takes approximately 7 hours, and you can either take the route via Cooma and Jindabyne or go through Khancoban and enter Kosciuszko National Park from the south. However, the Alpine Way from Khancoban can be challenging in winter and is sometimes closed due to snow conditions.
No matter how you choose to get there, Perisher’s breathtaking alpine scenery and world-class skiing make the journey well worth it. Whether you’re driving through the picturesque Snowy Mountains, taking the Skitube through a tunnel beneath the peaks, or arriving via shuttle, the trip to Perisher is part of the adventure.
